Case Overview

On March 7, 2025, Columbia University notified graduate student Daniel Di Martino he had been reported for alleged violation of its policies against discrimination and harassment. Columbia refused to tell Di Martino what prompted the reports, but demanded he attend a “Mandatory Educational Resolution” meeting at which respondents “must be willing to accept responsibility for their actions” or face official discipline. Since he could not accept responsibility for an unknown offense, Di Martino replied by requesting basic details of the allegations such as dates, locations, and people involved, as provided in Columbia policy, but was told that only people facing “Formal Investigation” would receive this information.

FIRE wrote Columbia on March 25, explaining that summoning Di Martino to a meeting to “accept responsibility” for mystery allegations was both unconscionable and a violation of Columbia’s policy. Columbia did not respond. At the meeting, Columbia administrators lectured Di Martino about how conservative and pro-Catholic statements he made on social media could be considered offensive or harassing, but took no further action.
