Northeastern University: Student Group Cancels Event with Israeli Historian After Administration Required an Attendance List
Cases
Northeastern University
Case Overview
On March 26, 2025, Northeastern University’s Jewish Law Students Advocating for Justice canceled a scheduled speaking event with Israeli historian Raz Segal, one day before the event would have taken place. The speech was set to cover the ongoing Israel/Hamas war and its impact on genocide studies. Despite going through the proper channels for event hosting, administrators told JLAJ a few days before the event it needed to provide a guest list to the university police department. Segal told the group he wouldn’t speak under these conditions, prompting the cancellation. ÃÛÌÒÖ±²¥ wrote Northeastern on April 25 outlining why anonymous event attendance is core political expression.
