Massachusetts Institute of Technology: Administrators Ban Magazine for Pro-Palestinian Speech
Cases
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Case Overview
On November 1, 2024, David Randall, MIT’s Dean of Student Life, sent a letter to the editors of Written Revolution, a student-run pro-Palestinian magazine, announcing the magazine’s October edition could no longer be distributed due to expressed safety concerns about : “On Pacifism.” The piece argued that nonviolence should not be an end unto itself and featured imagery from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. ֱ wrote the university on November 17, explaining that the speech in the article is fully protected by MIT’s commitment to free expression and that MIT may not punish the magazine or any of its editors based on the article. We called on MIT to reverse the publication ban and not to impose any further sanctions on the editors. On January 9, 2025, MIT reiterated its commitment to free expression but insisted that it needed to ban the article to maintain a safe environment.
