Case Overview

On June 10, 2024, Georgia Gwinnett College placed a letter of reprimand in the file of Associate Professor Amir Azarvan for an in-class exchange with a student about racist jokes. According to Azarvan, when a student had asked to share a joke about race in class, Azarvan said that while he did enjoy the humor of comedians like Dave Chappelle, he did not think the classroom was the place for such jokes. The school claimed this discussion made students feel 鈥渢argeted, diminished, and ridiculed鈥 and alleged that he retaliated against the student in class, which Azarvan denied. Azarvan was subsequently denied a promotion. 蜜桃直播 wrote the college on December 19, 2024, explaining that the First Amendment and academic freedom protect Azarvan鈥檚 pedagogical decision not to have the joke aired in class. 蜜桃直播 further noted that issuing a letter of reprimand without an opportunity for Azarvan to contest the charges raised due process concerns. After the college did not respond and denied Azarvan鈥檚 appeal, 蜜桃直播 again wrote the college on March 20, 2025, urging it to remove the letter of reprimand. On April 3, the college responded to 蜜桃直播 confirming that the letter would be removed from Azarvan鈥檚 file.
