Cases
Gallaudet University
Case Overview
On May 22, 2025, Gallaudet University released a community statement decrying the phrase “from the river to the sea” as “hate speech” and threatening punishment for using the phrase. In the statement, the university also notified the campus community that, to eliminate a “source of confusion,” it successfully filed a trademark infringement complaint with Meta to remove the handle @sjpgallaudet from Instagram. The account was owned by an unrecognized student-run chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. On June 3, ֱ wrote Gallaudet, explaining that the university’s free speech commitments encompass phrases such as “from the river to the sea,” and that trademark law cannot be applied where there is little likelihood of confusion. ֱ called on the university to clarify that it will not punish political or ideological speech and to withdraw its trademark infringement complaint.
