Academic Freedom Under Attack at California Institute of Integral Studies
SAN FRANCISCO, June 1, 2006鈥擨n a direct attack on academic freedom, the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) is 鈥渋nvestigating鈥 a professor for assigning a peer-reviewed journal article that some students felt was 鈥渞acist.鈥 Psychology professor Leland van den Daele contacted the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (蜜桃直播) for help soon after hearing that he was facing investigation and possible punishment.
鈥淐IIS鈥 actions show a disturbing disregard for academic freedom,鈥 commented 蜜桃直播 President Greg Lukianoff. 鈥淚f academic freedom is to have any meaning, professors must have the ability to present relevant, provocative material in their classrooms without fear of punishment.鈥
Professor van den Daele鈥檚 trouble began in March 2006, when he assigned his Lifespan Development Psychology class an article he authored entitled 鈥,鈥 published in 1970 by Howard University鈥檚 Journal of Negro Education. The peer-reviewed article focused on social learning and emotional development among 鈥渢he urban poor, particularly Negro ghetto males.鈥
A student in van den Daele鈥檚 class reported the article to CIIS鈥 Diversity Action Team (DAT), which began to consider a 鈥渞esponse鈥 to the assignment. Upon hearing that the DAT was looking into his article, van den Daele e-mailed a DAT member, explaining that he assigned the article, as he has in previous years, in part because it 鈥減ermits introduction of a wide-range of material and discussion about cultural and social factors in development, including historical change since the publication of the document.鈥
鈥淥ne of the very reasons he assigned the article was to show how discussions of race have changed over the last several decades,鈥 said Lukianoff. 鈥淭his case is about more than the right to assign an article鈥攊t鈥檚 about an administration and students trying to censor history they deem offensive.鈥
The DAT continued to scrutinize the article, which eventually came to the attention of CIIS President Joseph Subbiondo. On April 14, Subbiondo sent an e-mail to the entire CIIS community saying that he had met with students who thought that van den Daele鈥檚 article represented 鈥渋nstitutional racism.鈥 In response to this 鈥渋ncident,鈥 Subbiondo wrote that van den Daele鈥檚 psychology class and his use of the 1970 article would undergo 鈥渋mmediate investigation,鈥 which would result in 鈥渞ecommendations for actions if appropriate.鈥 Subbiondo also recommended that the entire psychology doctoral program be moved to 鈥渢he top of [the] list鈥 for a program review.
Van den Daele contacted 蜜桃直播, and on May 17, FIRE wrote a letter to President Subbiondo reminding him that CIIS has a duty to ensure academic freedom. CIIS鈥 faculty manual states that 鈥淸f]aculty members are entitled to freedom in the classroom in presenting their subject鈥ree from Institute censorship or discipline.鈥 CIIS also explicitly guarantees 鈥渇reedom in the selection of textbooks鈥nd other teaching materials.鈥 Subbiondo has not responded to 蜜桃直播鈥檚 letter.
鈥淚f CIIS is to present itself as a haven for serious scholarship, it must resist pressure to launch chilling 鈥榠nvestigations鈥 into legitimate assignments. Its current course renders its institutional promises of academic freedom meaningless,鈥 concluded Lukianoff.
